FAQ

What makes Corten steel planters different from regular steel or painted planters?

Corten steel, also called weathering steel, is designed to form a protective rust patina when exposed to the elements.

Unlike painted or powder-coated planters, this natural oxidation layer seals the surface and prevents deeper corrosion.

Each planter develops a unique patina tone and texture that enhances with time, giving it a natural warmth and modern industrial character.

Do Corten steel planters rust through over time?

No. Corten steel planters do not rust through.

The surface rust you see is intentional and protective, forming a stable layer that prevents further oxidation.

Once fully weathered, the planter will retain its strength and character for decades with no structural deterioration.

Can Corten steel planters stain concrete or surfaces?

During the initial weathering period, light rust runoff may occur as the steel begins to develop its patina.

We recommend placing planters on gravel, pavers, or soil during this stage, or using rubber pads or small risers beneath them to improve drainage.

After the patina stabilizes, staining is minimal or completely stops.

Are these planters heavy? How are they shipped?

Yes, each planter is crafted from thick-gauge Corten weathering steel, making it both sturdy and substantial.

Orders are shipped via freight delivery or available for local pickup in San Luis Obispo, California. Planters are securely packaged on pallets for safe transport.

Most in-stock orders ship within 7–10 business days, while custom orders take additional time.

How should I maintain my Corten steel planter?

Corten steel planters are virtually maintenance-free.

Allow them to weather naturally; avoid painting or sealing the metal surface.

To accelerate patina development or even out color, you can apply our Spray-X Rust Accelerator, made specifically for weathering steel.

Once the patina stabilizes, no ongoing care is required beyond an occasional rinse.

How long does a custom order take?

Custom orders typically take 4–6 weeks from final design approval to shipping.

Every planter is fabricated by hand in our California workshop, cut, welded, and finished from authentic Corten weathering steel.

You’ll receive progress updates throughout production, and finished pieces are shipped via freight with full tracking information.

Can I use Corten steel planters indoors?

Yes. Corten planters can be used indoors, but they require a few precautions.

Because Corten steel naturally oxidizes, we recommend using a plastic or fiberglass liner to prevent moisture or rust from transferring to floors or surfaces.

You can also seal the interior or use a removable inner pot to keep the planter looking clean while preserving its industrial aesthetic.

What thickness of steel do you use?

Our standard Corten weathering steel thickness is 3/16 inch, chosen for optimal balance of strength, weight, and longevity.

For larger or commercial planters, we offer custom thickness options (up to 1/4 inch) to ensure stability and performance in any environment.

Every piece is precision-cut, welded, and finished to maintain structural integrity for decades.
